Trial or free plan calculator

A free plan brings the most sign-ups, a card up front the most payers per sign-up, and when your product calls an AI model every free user has a running cost. Put in your visitors, price and cost per user and see the four ways in side by side after 12 months: paying customers, what free and trial users cost, and what is left.

Where the defaults come from

The sign-up and paying rates are the funnel medians from the January 2026 SaaS Conversion Report by ChartMogul, Growth Unhinged and ProductLed (200 products): 9% of visitors sign up for a free plan and 5.5% of them pay; a trial without a card converts about 5%, a trial with a card 30% of far fewer sign-ups. The reverse trial figures are our assumption inside the report's "good" range, since its sample was small. The AI cost presets use one request of 2,000 tokens in and 500 out on a model at $3 and $15 per million tokens.

The benchmarks, a second data set that disagrees with them on the card question, and how many sign-ups a test needs are in our article Free trial or free plan in 2026: what converts for a small SaaS. For the cost of serving paying customers, use the AI feature margin calculator.
